The bulk of the grants are being made from the Edith H. Turner Foundation Fund and include financial assistance for:
- First Start Café, a new social enterprise catering business that provides employment training to youth, adults and newcomers.
- Providing affordable transportation to grocery stores for rural seniors who can no longer drive.
- Art workshops for youth and their caregivers who are part of local Children’s Aid societies.
- Bringing Mealshare to Hamilton: a program that partners with restaurants and their patrons to feed youth in need through a “buy one, give one” strategy.
The grants support programming and access across Hamilton in areas such as recreation, education enrichment and employment readiness, nutrition and food security and mental health supports. Over $100,000 will support arts programming and access in theatre, visual arts and music.
Additional grants from the Foundation’s McCallum McBride Fund will help to fund environmental protection and projects at shelters and hostels serving women and children in crisis, plus programs offering support during the holidays.
“Hamilton has much to offer, but the needs in our community also show that not everyone has equal access to its many benefits,” says Sharon Charters, Manager of Grants. “These grants and bursaries work toward reducing barriers to basic needs, experiences and education that help more people reach their potential, improve their quality of life and make our city a better place for everyone.”

Hamilton Community Foundation has been working to drive positive change in Hamilton since 1954. We do this by helping people give in a way that has meaning to them and impact in the community, providing grants and financing to charitable organizations and initiatives and bringing people together to address priority issues that affect Hamiltonians. Last year HCF gave 750 grants to 296 charities, totalling $8.2 million. We also provided loans of $6.4 million to charities and non-profits across Hamilton.
